Laurel County Sheriff John Root says a tax payment scam is circulating the area. Scammers are telling people that they must go online or by phone and use a debit card to pay their property taxes. Sheriff Root says the only acceptable means of paying your taxes are by mail using a check or money order, or in person using a check, money order or debit card. The sheriff asks citizens to report any attempt to solicit payments online or by phone. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate this latest scam.
