A Clay County mother has been charged with murder in her daughter’s death. A grand jury returned a superseding indictment for one count of murder against Brianna “Morgan” Burkhart. Back in April, the Department of Community Based Services reached out to Kentucky State Police to investigate a suspected physical abuse complaint involving a three-month-old girl. During the investigation, Burkhart was identified as a suspect in the case. The child had been taken to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington with multiple fractures, retinal bleeding and hemorrhages. Burkhart was later indicted by a grand jury on three counts of assault and one count of criminal abuse of a child 12 or under. The child eventually died due to the injuries sustained from the abuse.
