October marks the beginning of fire season and fire departments throughout South Central and Eastern Kentucky want people to be safe. Fire season lasts until December 15th, when the area historically receives the least rain and experiences an increase in high winds. This combination leads to a higher chance of wildfires. Before Hurricane Helene reached Kentucky, bringing heavy rains to the region we were in a drought that could have increased wildfires. After all that rain, officials say the chances of seeing fires are lower. During fire season, a no-burning law prevents people from burning wood from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m..
