Following an executive session, the London City Council voted unanimously to contract an architectural firm to design a new city police building. The motion by councilman Kip Jervis, included moving the issue to the City’s finance committee. The London City Police Department is currently located in a former bank facility that was built in the 1970s. Proponents say the department has not only outgrown its space, but the building reportedly has black mold and is deteriorating structurally. That building also houses Laurel Dispatch. Council members did not reveal a potential location or specific plans for the facility, but hiring an architect is the first step toward finding an adequate home for the police department and 9-1-1 Center. The London City Council meets the first Monday of each month in the downstairs meeting room of the London Community Center at 5:30 p.m. If that date falls on a holiday, the meeting is moved until Tuesday.
