The Williamsburg Police Department and Whitley County Sheriff’s Department say officers have made an arrest in a church theft case. Police say 39-year-old Brandon Gonzalez, of Williamsburg, tried to use a check he stole from a church to buy items at Walmart. Gonzalez was taken into custody at his home after a brief foot chase. Police said the incident began when Gonzalez burglarized the Hanging Rock Baptist Church in Whitley County. In addition to stealing a check, police said the church was damaged from Gonzalez breaking in. Police said additional evidence was found at Gonzalez’s home. Gonzalez was served with two bench warrants and was charged with running from police, burglary, possession of burglary tools, criminal possession of a forged instrument and tampering with physical evidence. Gonzalez was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
